Damp problems explained
4 articles
Rising damp, condensation, penetrating damp, and how to tell them apart.
How can I tell if I have rising damp?
Tide marks, salt deposits, and damp patches up to a metre high. But beware: rising damp is the most misdiagnosed problem in the industry.
What's the difference between rising damp and condensation?
One comes up from the ground, the other out of the air. Treating one as the other wastes serious money.
What is penetrating damp?
Moisture coming through the building fabric from outside via pointing, render, gutters, or the roof. Usually worse after rain.
Can I treat damp myself?
Sometimes, but only after a correct diagnosis. DIY treatment of a misdiagnosed problem usually makes things worse and more expensive.
