Can I treat damp myself?

Some damp problems genuinely have DIY-friendly fixes: improving ventilation habits, keeping lids on pans, drying laundry outdoors or in a vented space, clearing a blocked gutter, or pulling furniture away from cold external walls. If the underlying issue is mild condensation, those changes alone can resolve it.

Where DIY goes wrong

  • Misdiagnosis: most homeowners (and plenty of tradespeople) misidentify the type of damp, and every type needs a different fix
  • Sealing the symptom: damp-proof paints and tanking slurries can trap moisture in the wall, pushing it elsewhere and accelerating plaster and timber decay behind the barrier
  • Wrong materials: replastering after rising damp needs specialist salt-resistant plaster; standard gypsum fails again quickly
  • No guarantee: professional treatment carries long-term insurance-backed guarantees; DIY carries none, which also matters when you sell

The sensible order of operations

Diagnose first, treat second. An independent survey costs from £300 and tells you exactly what the problem is and how serious it is. If the answer is 'run the extractor fan longer and reposition the wardrobe', the report will say so and you've spent £300 to avoid £3,000 of unnecessary work. If it's genuinely a failed DPC or active dry rot, you'll know the treatment is justified before committing to it, and you'll have independent evidence of what the job should involve.
